VAE leave in France: request and hours budget
A French private-sector employee can request authorised absence for VAE activities during working time. The statutory reference is forty-eight hours per evaluation session, with possible extension through collective provisions. Request, receipt and employer response follow separate rules. An hours budget does not establish approval in every case or finance the certification. Keep those decisions and the evidence separate.

When does VAE require an absence authorisation?
Employee-initiated VAE during working time uses an absence-authorisation framework for the relevant actions. A process entirely outside working hours does not use the same absence timetable.
Identify the certification, session and actions before requesting leave. VAE leave must remain separate from funding the entire service.

Which information belongs in the request?
The written request identifies certification, action dates, nature and duration, the certifying body and required receivability evidence. Records should correspond to the actual session.
Separate proposed scheduling from a received invitation or confirmation. Visible missing items are more useful than filling the file with assumed dates.

- Evidence corresponding to the process
- Receipt
- Evidence of the employer receiving the written request
How do sending, receipt and response differ?
The employer must receive the request at least thirty days before the relevant actions begin. A response is due within fifteen calendar days of receipt; silence counts as agreement within this framework.
Sending and receipt are different dates. Keep the starting-event evidence rather than inferring authorisation from estimated elapsed time or an out-of-scope request.
| Event | Reference | Record |
|---|---|---|
| Request received | At least thirty days before actions | Receipt evidence |
| Employer response | Fifteen calendar days from receipt | Response and any postponement reason |
| Postponement | Separate R6422-4 rule | Request and postponement decision |
What do the forty-eight hours cover?
The current reference is forty-eight hours per evaluation session, potentially increased by collective agreement. It is not a new allowance at every appointment.
Authorisation and remuneration of covered hours follow the statutory framework. Check the budget and any agreement before using an older twenty-four-hour document.

How can preparation and evaluation hours be allocated?
The worksheet totals preparation, support and evaluation within a confirmed single-session budget. It retains a negative balance if entered hours exceed that budget.
It calculates no sending, acceptance or postponement dates and validates no overrun. Keep actions and hours tied to the request’s records.

Do forty allocated session hours leave an eight-hour balance?
Sixteen preparation hours, sixteen support hours and eight evaluation hours total forty in the example. Eight remaining hours describe the confirmed forty-eight-hour budget.
That balance does not authorise a new unplanned action. A changed timetable or different session requires rereading the request and applicable framework.
Fictional confirmed forty-eight-hour session budget: sixteen preparation hours, sixteen support hours and eight evaluation hours total forty. Eight hours remain as a budget reference, not a fresh authorisation or a repeated entitlement at every appointment.

Which attendance evidence should be kept?
After the actions, participation may need proving at the employer’s request. Keep attendance records linked to authorised dates and durations.
Attendance evidence, an evaluation result and a training payment prove different things. A provider invoice alone does not replace participation evidence.
When does partial certification change a new absence authorisation?
Partial validation can permit a new authorisation without applying the ordinary one-year interval in the same way. Establish the evaluation outcome and certification pursued.
Keep the result decision and new action proposal. Multiple appointments do not establish several independent forty-eight-hour budgets.
What must be checked before a new request or postponement?
Another authorisation in the same company and postponement use different rules. The ordinary one-year interval for a new request has a partial-validation exception.
For postponement, Article R6422-4 specifies no more than one month from the request. Some summaries use receipt: read the exact provision and records instead of applying an automatic calendar.
What else should you check?
Is the private-sector limit still twenty-four hours?
The current private-sector framework shown uses forty-eight hours per evaluation session, potentially increased by agreement. Recheck an older twenty-four-hour reference.

Does each appointment create another forty-eight hours?
No. Actions may be spread across the process, but each appointment does not create a new forty-eight-hour allowance.

Can a collective agreement increase authorised time?
Yes. The Code permits an agreement-based increase. Retain the agreement and applicable budget before entering more than the ordinary reference.

Does absence authorisation automatically fund VAE?
No. Absence authorisation and service funding are separate questions. Pay retention within authorised scope does not fund the entire process.

Is every postponement period measured from receipt?
No. Article R6422-4 uses the request as the starting point for a maximum one-month postponement. Distinguish receipt, which starts the response period.
