French childcare tax credit: outside-home costs
France’s outside-home childcare credit concerns, subject to its conditions, a child under six on 1 January of the expenditure year. It is fifty percent of eligible care costs actually borne after relevant aid, within a per-child expense cap. Meals, age at filing and at-home employment are different issues. Equal dependency between parents changes the cap, so those facts must be identified before calculating.

Which child and expenditure year do the conditions concern?
Age is tested on January 1 of the expenditure year: the child must be under six in the framework shown. It is not age when the return is filed.
Identify tax household, dependency and expenditure year too. The worksheet requests no birth date; confirm these conditions before calculation.

Which outside-home childcare arrangements qualify?
The credit concerns qualifying outside-home care, including approved childminders and relevant establishments. An invoice labelled childcare alone does not establish provider eligibility.
Compare approval or status, certificates and payments. Foreign or special arrangements require checking equivalence conditions rather than assuming the ordinary case.

Why separate care, meals and aid?
Food costs are excluded. Aid funding the relevant care, including qualifying CAF or employer funding, must be deducted to identify expenditure actually borne.
Separate lines instead of entering a whole invoice. Do not subtract every family benefit indiscriminately; identify aid financing these childcare costs.
| Amount | Ledger treatment |
|---|---|
| Eligible childcare | Starting amount |
| Meals | Excluded from retained expenses |
| Aid for this care | Deduct from relevant expenditure |
| Confirmed net expense | Base before the cap |

Which expense cap applies to dependency status?
The ordinary retained-expense cap is €3,500 per child. It is halved to €1,750 when the child is deemed equally dependent on both parents.
The reference credit is half the capped base, at most €1,750 or €875 in these branches. These are expenses before applying the percentage, not a full credit cap for each parent.

How can confirmed expenditure be calculated?
Confirm age, year, provider, dependency and aid first. The worksheet subtracts aid from eligible care-only costs, caps the base and applies fifty percent.
Unknown aid prevents a reference rather than becoming zero. The result checks neither records nor final household entitlement.

What remains after €2,000 aid against €5,000 care costs?
In the confirmed ordinary fictional case, €5,000 care excluding meals minus €2,000 aid leaves €3,000. The credit reference is €1,500.
With equal dependency, the same net expenditure is capped at €1,750, giving an €875 reference. Select the actually applicable position.
Fictional confirmed ordinary case:€5,000 eligible care excluding meals less €2,000 aid leaves €3,000. Below the €3,500 expense cap, the fifty-percent reference is €1,500. Eligibility remains a separate check.

Which records support the return?
Connect costs, payments and aid for the same year. Keep certificates rather than a memory-based total.
- Tax certificate or qualifying provider evidence.
- Breakdown separating care and food.
- Aid allocated to those costs.
- Dependency information and expenditure year.

How does an advance differ from final entitlement?
An advance received does not validate the final credit. Final treatment depends on declared expenditure and conditions under the relevant mechanism.
Keep advance and final assessment records separately. This page computes neither reconciliation cash flows nor an amount already accepted by the administration.

What else should you check?
Is age tested on the filing date?
No. The reference is under six on January 1 of the expenditure year, not age when filing.

Are nursery meals included in eligible care costs?
No. Separate and exclude meals from retained care costs. A combined invoice needs allocation.

Does reimbursed CAF aid remain an out-of-pocket expense?
Aid funding these care costs must be deducted. Identify the relevant benefit rather than subtracting every CAF payment indiscriminately.

Does equal dependency give each parent the full ordinary cap?
No. Equal dependency halves the expense cap. Each parent does not retain a full cap.

Does this credit cover someone caring for the child at home?
No. This page concerns outside-home care. Employing a carer at home has a different framework covered separately.
