French carte grise in 2026: the price per fiscal horsepower in each region, this year’s rises and how the certificate is priced
The price of a French registration certificate (carte grise) is mostly the regional tax: your region’s rate per fiscal horsepower times the vehicle’s fiscal power, plus an €11 fixed tax and €2.76 for delivery. In 2026, the rate runs from €30 in Mayotte to €68.95 in Île-de-France, where a €14 surcharge applies since 1 March; it is halved for a vehicle 10 years old or more (CIBS, articles L421-42 and L421-45).

How is the price of a French carte grise worked out?
Registration bears a fixed tax, a regional tax and, depending on the vehicle, a tax on transport vehicles and the CO2 and weight malus (CIBS, article L421-30). The regional tax is the region’s rate per fiscal horsepower, €60 at most, times the administrative power shown in box P.6 (article L421-42), the region being that of the holder’s home (article L421-43).
On top come the €11 fixed tax (article L421-38) and the €2.76 delivery fee; payment is by bank card online (fiche F19211). The CO2 and weight malus target the first registration in France of a passenger car, new or imported (fiches F35947 and F35950).

What does article L421-42 of the CIBS say?
The text that makes fiscal power and the regional rate the core of the price.
In English, briefly (our summary, not an official translation): The amount of the tax is the product of a regional rate, capped at €60, and the administrative power of the vehicle. The regional rate is set by the region where the registration certificate is deemed issued under articles L421-43 or L421-44. Since 1 March 2026, Île-de-France may add a surcharge outside the cap (article L421-54-1), set at €14 until 31 December 2026.
