French driving licence points: on which date do you get them back?

A point taken off a French licence comes back on its own, but the date depends on the offence: six months for a single lost point, two years with no new offence for contraventions of the first three classes, three years once a délit or a 4th or 5th class contravention sits in the file. An awareness course restores up to four points, once a year. This page places your case in the right branch and gives the date.

The full twelve points are rebuilt at two years for contraventions of the first three classes, at three years as soon as a 4th or 5th class contravention or a délit is involved. The ten-year restoration covers only contraventions of the first four classes. The course sits outside all of these periods.

01

On which date do your points come back?

Answer with your fine notice or your licence record in front of you. The result is a branch of article L223-6 and an indicative date, never your official balance.

Points recovery date calculator

Four questions: what you lost, the date the offence was established, any later offence, any recent course.

What did you lose, and for which offence?
Since that date, have you committed another offence that cost you points?
Have you attended a road-safety awareness course in the last twelve months?
Result

Enter what you lost, the date the offence was established and whether a new offence followed: the result is a branch of article L223-6, not your official balance.

What Julie does with your file: read your relevé d’information intégral (full licence record), sort each deduction into its branch, say whether a course buys you time or capital.

Worked example (visible without JavaScript). A driver who loses a single point for a 10 km/h excess, pays the fixed fine on 12 March 2026 and commits no further offence gets the result POINT BACK AT 6 MONTHS. The four branches are listed below; the date itself appears once you enter your own.
  • POINT BACK AT 6 MONTHS · A single lost point returns six months after the date that counts.
  • FULL POINTS AT 2 YEARS · Contraventions of the first three classes: two years with no new offence.
  • FULL POINTS AT 3 YEARS · 4th or 5th class contravention, or a délit: the period becomes three years.
  • THE TEN-YEAR RULE · A new offence restarted the clock, so the ten-year restoration is what remains.
02

Which period applies to my offence class?

The period follows the class of the offence, not the number of points lost. The same speeding ticket changes class with the posted limit, and that shifts the rebuild from two years to three.

When do my French licence points come back on their own?

Six months for a single lost point, two years with no new offence for contraventions of the first three classes, three years once a délit or a 4th or 5th class contravention is in the file. Article L223-6 of the Highway Code (Code de la route) sets these three periods. The two and three year rules rebuild the whole capital; the six-month rule only returns the point lost through a one-point offence, and only if no further deduction happens meanwhile.

04

From which date does the clock actually start?

Not from the day you were caught. It starts the day the offence is established: fixed fine paid, enforcement order for the increased fine, composition pénale carried out, or final conviction. Article L223-1 of the Highway Code names those four events as what triggers the deduction, and article L223-6 runs the rebuild from the same date. Paying late therefore pushes back the day your points return by the same amount.

05

Does a new offence reset the clock?

Yes for the two and three year periods: they restart from the last offence established. The ten-year restoration keeps running, point by point. That ten-year restoration only covers contraventions of the first four classes. The official service-public sheet F1685 adds two conditions: the balance must not have hit zero, and the capital must not already have returned to twelve points since that offence.

06

How many points does an awareness course give back, and when?

Up to four points, once a year, within your licence ceiling. The credit takes effect from the day after the last day of the course. Article R223-8 of the Highway Code fixes the four points and that effective date; the préfecture (local state administration) records the restoration within one month of receiving the certificate and notifies it by ordinary letter. The stage de sensibilisation runs two consecutive days (article R223-5) and requires a licence still valid, so at least one point left.

Probationary licence: what changes for a new driver in France?

Six points to start, then two points a year over three years, or three points a year over two years after conduite accompagnée (accompanied learner driving). Losing three points or more makes a course compulsory. Article R223-1 sets the six initial points and the yearly increase; article R223-4 imposes the course within four months of a registered letter (reference 48N), failing which a 4th class contravention fine applies. Article L223-1 rules out the two-year rebuild during the probationary period.

08

What happens when the balance reaches zero?

The licence loses its validity. A registered letter, referenced 48SI, states the invalidation and requires you to hand the licence to the préfecture within ten clear days. Article L223-1 provides that a nil balance ends validity, and article R223-3 organises the registered-letter notification. Article L223-5 then imposes a six-month wait from the day the licence is handed in before a new one, extended to a year if a second nil balance occurs within five years, with a medical and psychotechnical assessment.

09

Can I challenge a points deduction?

Yes, but before the administrative court, not the court that handles the fine. Paying the fixed fine establishes the offence and triggers the deduction, which is usually the tipping point. The service-public sheet F1704 opens two routes against an invalidation: an administrative appeal to the ministère de l’intérieur (interior ministry) and a contentious appeal to the tribunal administratif (administrative court). Article R421-1 of the code of administrative justice caps the latter at two months from notification.

10

How do I see my balance and the date of each deduction?

Through the official Mes Points Permis service: current balance, ten years of losses and recoveries, and the relevé d’information intégral to download via FranceConnect. The service-public sheet R17121 describes the service and its login through FranceConnect or a personal account, using the NEPH licence number. The relevé d’information intégral (full licence record) gives the date recorded for each deduction, the only figure that lets you place an offence in the right branch of article L223-6.

11

I drive on a foreign licence: does the points system reach me?

Yes, once your licence has been exchanged for a French one. An EU licence must in fact be exchanged as soon as an offence committed in France costs you points. Article R222-2 of the Highway Code makes the exchange compulsory after any restriction, suspension, withdrawal of the right to drive or points deduction, failing which a 4th class contravention fine applies. Outside the EU and the European Economic Area, article R222-3 recognises the licence only for one year after you settle in France.

When should Julie or a lawyer step in?

Julie reads your record and places each date; a lawyer takes over when the balance nears zero or once an invalidation has been notified. Appeal windows are short: two months to seize the tribunal administratif from notification (article R421-1 of the code of administrative justice), ten clear days to hand in an invalidated licence. A dated, sorted timeline of the deductions is the first thing a lawyer asks for.
