AI legal translation: five checks before you share legal text
AI can help prepare a draft translation of legal text, but it does not make that draft certified, confidential, or legally reliable. Before sharing anything, check—first—the sensitivity of the text, the minimum data actually needed, the terms that must remain controlled, the person responsible for reviewing the legal meaning, and whether the recipient requires a traducteur agréé (court-approved translator). If the document is for an authority, court, notary or formal French process, first ask what format is accepted and use a sworn/approved translator where required. This page is a protocol, not a translation service.
AI output is not a traduction certifiée conforme. If the recipient requires an official translation, use the official approved-translator finder. Paste no secret or sensitive text into an unapproved workflow.
Five checks in risk order — not a product ranking
The order reflects safe failure, not relative importance. Passing five checks creates neither compliance nor certification.
| Check | Practical action | Evidence / owner | Stop condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Confidentiality | Class public, internal, client, secrecy-bound, sensitive or unknown | Approved policy + owner | Secrecy, sensitive or unknown without workflow: do not share |
| 2. Minimum necessary | Use an excerpt and consistent placeholders | Record what was removed | Removal changes meaning: approved human route |
| 3. Terminology | Source term, target, location, owner and question | Versioned bilingual sheet | Undefined term or conflict: human review |
| 4. Human review | Check terms, negations, amounts, dates and citations | Named role and scope | No reviewer or filing/signature text: do not rely |
| 5. Official translation | Ask recipient what it accepts | Instruction + approved translator if required | Certified, court, notary or authority: approved route |
Choose a translation route without a score or text
The protocol translates nothing and requests no document. Choose categories only.
Complete all seven checks to show the strictest route.
Official translator route
The formality or recipient requires the official translation route.
Do not share until approved
Secrecy, sensitive data, unknown sensitivity or an unapproved workflow needs human governance.
Minimise and freeze terms
A full file or missing terminology sheet exposes meaning and unnecessary data.
Human review required
Missing or language-only review does not validate legal effect.
Ask the recipient first
Formality cannot be inferred from the document title.
Internal draft with controls
The protocol structures a draft; it certifies neither confidentiality, legal quality nor filing fitness.
Can I use AI to prepare a legal translation?
Yes, as a controlled draft where data sharing is approved and a competent human remains responsible. The output is not certified, inherently confidential or legally reliable without review.
When does a French document need a traducteur agréé?
The recipient, document and country determine the formality. For a court, authority, notary or formal process, ask what is accepted and use an approved translator where required.
Why is confidentiality the first check before AI translation?
Translation requires sending the text somewhere. If you do not know whether an external workflow is approved for that content, do not paste it; use the responsible lawyer, DPO or security route.
What data can I remove before sharing a legal excerpt?
Keep only the necessary excerpt and, where meaning permits, remove names, contacts, accounts, identifiers, signatures, annexes and unrelated facts. Use consistent placeholders such as [CLIENT].
How do I control legal terms that must not change meaning?
Create a bilingual sheet with source term, approved target, location, owner and unresolved question. Freeze dates, amounts, roles, articles, negations and defined terms too.
Who should review an AI-prepared legal translation?
Name the competence and scope: language, terminology, legal effect and filing formality. Text for signature, negotiation or filing needs human responsibility suited to both legal systems.
Is language-only proofreading enough for a contract, decision or procedure?
Not where legal effect, duties, remedies, timing or cross-references matter. Fluency does not prove that legal scope, negations and citations survived.
What should I check about a provider before using generative AI?
Check permitted use, reuse, retention, roles, subprocessors, transfers, access and security in the actual documentation. This page attests no supplier.
Does the GDPR automatically forbid or approve AI translation?
No. Purpose, data, roles, legal basis, minimisation, security and transfers depend on facts. A five-step protocol does not replace DPO-led analysis.
Does French lawyer professional secrecy allow a file to be sent to any tool?
No. Secrecy covers confidences and file material on any medium; the firm must apply its own policy and review the external workflow before transmission.
Does this page compare DeepL, LLMs or translation services?
No. It orders five supplier-neutral controls and does not compare quality, confidentiality, price or regulatory status.
What should I prepare for human review or an official translation?
Prepare the purpose, source and target legal systems, sensitivity, minimum excerpt, term sheet, non-negotiables and the recipient’s formality requirement.
