Récépissé or ANEF certificate in France: what does your exact document allow?
Your provisional French residence document must be identified before work or travel rights can be assessed. A filing acknowledgement is different from a récépissé, a processing extension or a favourable decision. Renewal of a work-authorising permit differs from a first application, and existing restrictions still matter. Is the ANEF filing receipt enough?
No. A simple online attestation de dépôt does not itself prove lawful residence. Article R431-15-1 distinguishes filing evidence from a processing-extension certificate and a favourable-decision certificate.
Can I keep working during renewal?
A renewal récépissé for a work-authorising permit permits professional activity within the applicable rules. R431-15 covers the renewal receipt; R431-15-2 separately covers extension certificates. Do not assume you can change employer without checking the permit’s restrictions.
What about a first application?
Work rights depend on the permit category and statutory conditions, not merely the word récépissé. R431-14 lists first-application receipts permitting work. R431-15-2 addresses processing-extension certificates separately.
What does a processing extension prove?
An attestation de prolongation d’instruction is a distinct provisional document proving residence under the conditions of R431-15-1. For renewal, it accompanies the expired residence document. A simple filing acknowledgement does not have that effect.
How long is the document valid?
Read its dates. A récépissé lasts at least one month and may be renewed; an extension certificate lasts no more than three months per issue. R431-13 governs receipt duration. R431-15-1 provides for extension-certificate renewal while processing continues under the stated conditions.
Can I book an overseas trip?
Have the exact document, validity dates, passport, expired permit and transit conditions checked before leaving. Residence and work provisions alone do not guarantee re-entry, a visa for another country or airline boarding. First applications and renewals need separate assessment.
Do all benefits continue automatically?
No universal continuation follows merely from having an application pending. Check the document and each benefit. L433-3 preserves social and work rights during defined periods for the categories it covers. It does not automatically cover every residence applicant.
Is a favourable decision the same as the card?
Its certificate proves residence while the permit is awaiting delivery, but it is a separate document. R431-15-1 provides for this certificate. Check work and travel conditions independently against the actual permit granted.
When should a lawyer step in?
